Limit your intake of saturated fat and choose healthy fats for cooking like olive oil. You can cut down on saturated fat by choosing fat free or low fat dairy products and buying lean cuts of meat.

Another useful tip is to be mindful when you eat. One of the bad habits many of us have is to sit in front of the TV or computer and munch away mindlessly on food. We barely have any recollection of what we eat so we don't feel satisfied by it. If you don't pay attention, you can chug down a whole lot of calories and not even know it.
